Texas Wireless Summit
Sitting in on a great panel at the summit on location-based services. Panelists include:
- Joe Chen, GeoSpot
- Bryan Jones, Moximity
- Andrew Graham, Bones in Motion
- Dan Lowden, Wayport
The panel is moderated by Clint Wheelock, from ABI Research. As a moderator, Clint has been doing a great job of sprinkling into the conversation some relevant details about the market, based upon their research.
Joe Chen from GeoSpot shared a great story about the EyeFi wireless storage card for cameras. If you’re not familiar with the card, it will upload your photos to the web over wireless, and geotag them at the same time. No more connecting your camera to upload to a computer, plus your photos get shared immediately. The story Joe relayed was about someone whose EyeFi enabled digital camera was stolen, and the culprits didn’t exactly understand the technology they had in their hands. Based upon the pictures taken and their geo-location, police were able to apprehend the suspects and retrieve the camera pretty quickly. As Bryan Jones said, this was the first case we’ve heard of where someone Lojack’d their digital camera.
Andrew Graham was saying that their Bones in Motion system will alert runners when their shoes hit the 250-300 mile mark, which is the practical limit to a running shoe lifespan. So, how long before these guys get bought by Academy or Nike?
Usage for location-based services is in it’s infancy right now. It will be interesting to see all the uses for LBS that people invent, and even more interesting to see which ones really catch on with consumers.

[...] Next up was a panel discussion on Location Aware Applications. I was part of a fantastic group, which included Clint Wheelock, VP & Chief Research Officer at ABI Research, Joe Chen, the Founder & CEO of GeoSpot Inc., Andrew J. Graham, CEO of Austin’s own Bones in Motion, Inc., and Dan Lowden, VP of Business Development and Marketing at Wayport. The conversation ranged from lo-jacked cameras to the future of mobile devices, and the related services that will accompany the evolution of location aware applications. Austin Startup live-blogged a bit of the panel here (http://www.austinstartup.com/2008/10/texas-wireless-summit/) [...]
